Ikaika Malloe, once ingrained in the University of Washington football program as much as anyone — first as a player and then as an assistant coach — on Wednesday earned a promotion to UCLA defensive coordinator.
Malloe, who had to leave Montlake once Jimmy Lake's staff was fired, has been with the Bruins for the past two seasons, working for Chip Kelly as an edge-rusher coach and then the defensive line.
To become defensive coordinator, Malloe replaces D'Anton Lynn, who left the Bruins to become USC's defensive leader.
"Ikaika has a track record of developing NFL talent on the field and outstanding young men off it," Kelly said in a statement. "I am excited to watch this next step for him and our team."
Malloe played safety and outside linebacker for the Huskies in 1993-96, leading the team in interceptions with 5 in 1995.
He worked as a grad assistant for three seasons before getting full-time jobs at Western Illinois, UTEP, Hawaii, Yale, Portland State and Utah State.
Malloe coached six seasons for the Huskies, four for Chris Petersen and two for Lake, serving as an edge-rushers and defensive-line coach, and sharing in co-defensive coordinator duties.
