It took many college football fans off guard when 2026 Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy five-star pass rusher Zion Elee opted for the Maryland Terrapins back in December. Considered an elite recruit in the class, Elee has mostly been quiet during his recruiting process. He has continued to say all the right things to the public, and back his commitment to Maryland.
Despite that continued reaffirmation, there is still some uneasiness around the firmness of that commitment. Elee has taken a couple of visits since then, including an official visit to Auburn on May 9-11. On3 vice president of recruiting Steve Wiltfong spoke about Elee and his potential to flip on the On3 Recruits YouTube channel. In segment called “Stick of Flip”, Wiltfong made his prediction short and sweet.
“I think he ultimately flips... Just based on over 20 years of covering recruiting.”
Of all the recruitments they covered, the conversation about Elee was by far the most brief from Wiltfong. Who knows if there is some major smoke happening behind the scenes, or if this is a pure projection. The baseline of the selection seemed to center around the concern for the Terrapins to hold onto this type of recruit, particularly when considering the trends of smaller programs holding onto a player like Elee.
The 6-3.5, 220-pound defender is a tremendous combination of bend, explosiveness, and closing speed. As a junior, Elee was a dominant force for St. Frances. He managed to collect 56 total tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, seven pass breakups, and three forced fumbles.
From a talent and production perspective, there isn’t much not to like about Elee. There is a reason so many prominent programs have been pursuing the Maryland star. Some of those top offers include Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Texas, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Tennessee among many, many others.
If Maryland is able to hold onto Elee, this would be a monumental victory for head coach Mike Locksley. The Terrapins have done a nice job of keeping some talent at home over the years, but not to this degree. Elee is a special pass rusher that typically doesn’t stay in the home state. We will see if Maryland is able to make it happen.
