The defense might not have been a rock - it finished 15th in the SEC - but it held firm outside of the three losses to Miami, Texas, and Texas A&M. The Gators allowed 123 points in those three defeats, and 177 over the other ten games.
It needs to hold up better against the run, and more third down stops are a must, but the Gators did a decent job of bending-not-breaking thanks to plenty of takeaways generated from lots and lots of sacks.
It’s a veteran group with a strong bunch of recruits coming in, and now the steady production has to be there against all of the great teams on the slate.

- Tyreak Sapp should once again be among the best pass rushers in the SEC. The 6-3, 274-pounder blew up with seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss, but he’s not alone on the line. George Gumbs came in from Northern Illinois and put up five sacks and 35 stops, and 6-6, 275-pound Kamran James is a nice part of the rotation.
The Gators are big on the ends, and getting tackle Jamari Lyons back after missing last year is a massive boost on the inside for an already good situation. 355-pound Michai Boireau is a pure anchor on the nose, and 6-6, 329-pound Caleb Banks can play either tackle spot.
- The linebacking combination of Myles Graham and Grayson Howard will hold up fine. The speedy 227-pound Graham made 30 tackles as a freshman, and the 232-pound Howard should double the 37 tackles as the main man in the middle.
Jaden Robinson was fifth on the team with 52 stops, Aaron Chiles had a promising first year with 22 tackles, and they should all start to get into the backfield more.
- Good things happened when the secondary was taking the ball away in bunches. The Gators came up with two or more picks in four of the last seven games, led by Bryce Thornton’s three on the season. The sophomore came up with 41 tackles, and now he should do more with a bigger role.
Jordan Castell is a mainstay at free safety, but can play anywhere, making 55 tackles with nine broken up passes. Add Sharif Dennison, and star freshmen prospects Drake Stubbs and Latonia Hayward, and the safeties are strong.
Dijon Johnson, Devin Moore, Cormani McClain, and Micheal Caraway (Southern Miss) are good enough at corner, but they need to turn their experience into more big plays.
