Florida Gators land elite 2024 five-star QB recruit DJ Lagway

The Florida Gators aren't yet back to the level they enjoyed under Urban Meyer and in the height of the Tim Tebow years, but Billy Napier did some nice things in his first season as head coach and he just got himself a huge win on the recruiting trial.

DJ Lagway, a five-star quarterback from Willis, Texas, has committed to play for Florida as part of its 2024 class.

“I feel they’re going to build something special and I definitely want to be part of it,” Lagway told 247Sports, speaking of the Gators. “The coaching staff, I have a really good relationship with those guys. I love the system that they have. Coach Napier has an amazing system and I feel I fit perfectly in there.”

Speaking of Napier, at this juncture of his tenure in Gainsville, it's frankly the recruiting wins that will mean the most for Florida's long-term projections. Florida went just 6-6 this season, so the record left a bit to be desired. Lagway's commitment can't be understated regarding the future of Napier's program, though. According to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings, Lagway is ranked as the No. 24 overall 2024 recruit in the country. Amongst quarterbacks, he's ranked No. 4.

Speaking of wins, it's notable that Lagway committed to Florida despite heavy interest in USC, Clemson, Baylor, and Texas A&M.

Snagging a top player out of Texas is always a big deal on the recruiting trail. Stealing that player away from the likes of Lincoln Riley and Dabo Swinney? Well, that suggests Napier could be building something special again at Florida.

Lagway certainly thinks so.
