After three seasons with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, quarterback Zach Pyron entered the transfer portal and eventually joined the Minnesota Golden Gophers in December.

Just a few months later, Pyron is back in the portal after likely failing to beat out the incumbent signal-caller, redshirt freshman Drake Lindsey. A former three-star recruit out of Fayetteville, Arkansas, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound quarterback was the team's backup behind Max Brosmer, who finished his eligibility last season.

In a projected depth chart for the Golden Gophers posted before spring practices, Pyron was listed as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Lindsey.

Pyron saw limited playing time in his three seasons with the Yellow Jackets. He played in 19 games, completed 88 of 155 passes for 995 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Last year, Pyron made his first start since his freshman season for Georgia Tech, a 31-13 home loss to Notre Dame. In that contest, he passed for 269 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He added 45 rushing yards on 13 carries.

He would start again the following week, a 21-6 road loss to Virginia Tech. In that game, Pyron completed just 10-of-22 passes for 76 yards and an interception.

As a freshman, he made three starts, winning one game against Virginia Tech and losing the other two contests against Miami and Florida State. All told, he collected 565 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

In an interview before spring practices, Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck believed the quarterback competition between Pyron and Lindsey would be "fierce".

"It's unique in its own right. Every year is its own entity, and just because you did something last year doesn't mean you're going to do it again this year," Fleck said. "Our program is all about earning the opportunity to compete and play in the greatest conference in the country... The quarterback competition is going to be fierce—it really will be. It's going to be a lot of fun; it has already started."

Pyron has one year of eligibility remaining as a grad transfer.
