Former Aggie QB, Heisman Winner, Johnny Manziel’s Mother Arrested for DWI in Texas
USA TODAY Sports

Michelle Manziel, the mother of former Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, was arrested Saturday night in Kerrville, Texas, on a charge of driving while intoxicated, according to TMZ Sports, which first broke the news.

Authorities in Kerrville—a town roughly 65 miles northwest of San Antonio—booked Michelle Manziel on DWI charges. She was initially held on a $7,500 bail, though records indicate she has since been released. Law enforcement officials have yet to release further details on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

A mug shot obtained by TMZ shows Michelle Manziel appearing visibly stunned as she processed the situation.

The Manziel family has deep roots in Kerrville. It’s where Johnny first made a name for himself as a standout at Tivy High School before committing to Texas A&M, where he became one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in college football history. Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012, becoming the first freshman to ever claim the prestigious award. His dazzling play earned him a first-round selection by the Cleveland Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft, though his pro career lasted just 14 games over two seasons.

While Michelle’s arrest is unrelated to her son’s past struggles, Johnny has been vocal about his battle with substance abuse in the years following his football career. The former Aggie star previously admitted to using Oxycontin and cocaine daily following the 2015 NFL season, which led to a staggering 40-pound weight loss in just a few months. He later revealed he went on a "$5 million bender" and attempted to take his own life.

Manziel has since turned his life around, sharing that he is now sober and working toward personal growth.

As for Michelle, neither she nor her representatives have publicly commented on the arrest.
