Former Five-Star Cornerback Announces Transfer Destination
Alex Martin/Journal and Courier / USA TODAY NETWORK

Purdue has lost eight defensive backs to the transfer portal since it opened on Dec. 9. On Wednesday, one landed with a new team.

On3's Hayes Fawcett reported that former Purdue cornerback Tarrion Grant committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders via X. Grant was a five-star prospect in the 2025 class before reclassifying to the 2024 class and becoming a four-star recruit.

Purdue has seen a mass exodus from its program via the portal after the firing of former head coach Ryan Walters. Before Purdue, Walters was the defensive coordinator at Illinois from 2021-22.

The Boilermakers have lost 26 players to the portal and have not added any commits.

Grant was the No. 7 player in the On3 Transfer Portal Industry Rankings. He played in 11 games for Purdue as a true freshman, with 13 total tackles and one forced fumble.

Walters' tenure at Purdue ended with a 5-19 record over the last two seasons. The Boilermakers have since hired former UNLV head coach Barry Odom. Odom had a 27-19 record with the Rebels and took them to the Mountain West Conference Championship Game from 2023-24.

Texas Tech has spent plenty of time in the transfer portal, earning the top class in college football. The Red Raiders have added talent like former UCF defensive lineman Lee Hunter, former Charlotte corner Dontae Balfour, former Mississippi State corner Brice Pollock and former Miami (Ohio) receiver Reginald Virgil.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire will be coaching in his third straight bowl game since joining the Red Raiders in 2022. The Red Raiders ended the regular season with an 8-4 record.

McGuire and company will face Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl to end the season. Kickoff is on Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
