When a four-star lineman with SEC pedigree steps onto your campus, it’s not just a visit—it’s a headline. That’s exactly what happened this weekend as former Florida State and Alabama offensive lineman TJ Ferguson arrived in Dallas to explore a potential future with the SMU Mustangs.

High-Caliber Experience Looking for a Reboot

Ferguson was once a top-60 national recruit, signing with Alabama in 2021 before transferring to Florida State last season. Despite a tough 2024 campaign marked by injuries and inconsistency—he posted a 42.6 grade on 487 snaps, per Pro Football Focus—Ferguson’s ceiling remains high. At 6-foot-4, 315 pounds, he brings a rare combination of size, SEC-level training, and experience in both pass-heavy and run-oriented systems. SMU offensive line coach Garin Justice could see this as a low-risk, high-reward addition.

Ferguson’s Visit Signals Mutual Interest

Multiple programs, including Mississippi State and Syracuse, have shown interest in Ferguson, but his stop at SMU highlights a serious look at what the Mustangs are building in the ACC. Sources confirmed his visit began Friday, and while no commitment was made, the visit included time with SMU’s coaching staff, facilities tour, and a review of their offensive scheme. For a team replacing three starters up front, Ferguson’s presence would add depth and veteran leadership.

SMU’s Growing Appeal in the Transfer Portal

This visit underscores SMU’s growing footprint in the transfer portal. Now in a Power Conference, the Mustangs are targeting players who might’ve been out of reach just two years ago. Head coach Rhett Lashlee has been clear: SMU wants to compete immediately, and bringing in a player like Ferguson—ranked the No. 14 interior OL in the portal by 247Sports—would be a step toward that goal.

Ferguson’s next move could come quickly, and SMU is officially in the race. Mustang fans should keep their eyes on this one—if Ferguson commits, it could be the spark SMU’s offensive line needs heading into their inaugural ACC season.
