Former Georgia Bulldogs standout offensive lineman continues to prove Kirby Smart knows exactly how to develop NFL-ready talent

Former Georgia Bulldogs offensive lineman Tate Ratledge is proving that head coach Kirby Smart knows how to develop NFL-ready talent.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Ratledge is expected to start for the Detroit Lions at right guard as a rookie.

Early offseason reports said Ratledge was going to take over Frank Ragnow's position at center. Instead, the Lions moved Graham Glasgow from right guard to center, leaving Ratledge to fill in the blank.

This is a position that Ratledge knows all too well from his days in Athens.

The former four-star recruit from Tennessee kicked off his college football career at Georgia in a backup role before becoming the Bulldogs’ starting right guard in 2022. In his final two seasons with the Dawgs, Ratledge gave up just two sacks, which earned him consecutive First-Team All-SEC selections and All-American honors.

While Ratledge will start at right guard for Detroit in 2025, moving to center could still be in his future.

“I love how smart he is. And he’s just going to continue to grow," Lions offensive line coach John Morton said. "I mean, I thought he did an exceptional job when he was at the center. I mean, that’s a lot mentally. Different snap counts and audibles. It was a lot, and I thought he did a pretty good job. I’m really happy where he’s at.”

Ratledge, a second-round pick by Detroit back in April, was one of three Georgia players drafted by the Lions this year.

They also snagged wide receiver Dominic Lovett and safety Dan Jackson in the seventh round. Unfortunately, Jackson will start the 2025 season on Injured Reserve following a leg injury he suffered during training camp practice.

Under Smart's coaching at Georgia, 63 players have been drafted into the NFL, which includes 17 first-round selections.
