Former Georgia Tech Defensive Back Kenyatta Watson II Transfers to Georgia State
USA TODAY Sports

Former Georgia Tech defensive back Kenyatta Watson II is transferring to Georgia State. Watson II entered the transfer portal in December and he will be joining the Panthers. Georgia Tech hosts Georgia State on August 31st, the Yellow Jackets' second game of the season.

Watson totaled five tackles this year for the Yellow Jackets. He is another loss for the secondary, with Myles Sims out of eligibility and Kenan Johnson transferring to Utah. Georgia Tech has brought in Tennessee transfer Warren Burrell and Rhode Island transfer Syeed Gibbs so far.

From his bio at Georgia Tech Athletics:

2022 (Redshirt Sophomore): Played in 10 games … Finished the season with seven tackles … Recorded a season-high five tackles (two solo) at FSU (Oct. 29) … Other stops came at UCF (Sept. 24) and No. 1 Georgia (Nov. 26).

2021 (Redshirt Freshman): Saw action in six games as a reserve defensive back and on special teams … Did not record any statistics.

2019-20 (Texas):Transfer from the University of Texas … Played in six games over two seasons at Texas, totaling nine tackles and two pass breakups … Retained four seasons of eligibility due to redshirt (2019) and NCAA Covid-19 regulations (2020).

Watson II is not the first Yellow Jackets to transfer to Georgia State this offseason.

Quarterback Zach Gibson is also going to be staying in Atlanta to play for Georgia State.

From our very own Rohan Roman:

"In his time at Georgia Tech, Gibson played in six games, starting three after former starter Jeff Sims went down with an injury. He threw for 589 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions on a 54.8% completion percentage. The highlight of his tenure at Tech came against No. 13 North Carolina, where he completed 72.2% of his passes for 184 yards and led the GT offense to a massive upset win. He also played well against Georgia, posting a season-high 191 yards on a 54.2% completion percentage as the Jackets played an excellent first half of offense before faltering against the eventual national champions.

Gibson was a part of the competition for the starting QB spot against Haynes King and Zach Pyron but ultimately lost out to King. He did not appear in a game during the 2023 season."
