Former Gophers quarterback Athan Kalikamanis was named officially named the starter at Rutgers Wednesday, according to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel.

After playing 23 games the last two seasons, Kaliakmanis entered the transfer portal last November, following former Gophers' offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca to Rutgers.

After totaling 1,838 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season, a decision for Minnesota to move in a different direction the position made sense. Fleck and his staff brought in New Hampshire transfer Max Brosmer to be their new signal caller.

Talent has never been Kaliakmanis' issue, but he has now beaten out longtime Rutgers' starter Gavin Wimsatt to be the new starter at the QB position for the Scarlett Knights.

The Gophers' November 9 game at Rutgers now gets a heck of a lot more interesting as a revenge opportunity for him to show the program what they decided to move on from.
