Former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler is transferring to South Carolina, he announced on Twitter on Monday night.
Rattler, 21, was a preseason favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in 2021 after throwing for 28 touchdowns and running in six more during his freshman season with the Sooners in 2020. However, he struggled to take a step forward in 2021.
In October, Rattler was benched during a game against the Texas Longhorns in favor of Caleb Williams and played only sparingly the rest of the season. Rattler finished his sophomore season with 11 touchdowns, five interceptions and three rushing touchdowns. He announced his intention to transfer in November, one day after Lincoln Riley left his job as head coach at Oklahoma to take over at USC.
The South Carolina Gamecocks could desperately use help at quarterback after struggling to find consistency at the position in 2021. Senior Jason Brown threw eight touchdown passes, senior Zeb Noland threw six and sophomore Luke Doty threw five.
Doty started four games before a foot injury ended his season in October.
