The Kyren Lacy story had already been unraveling in disappointing fashion over the past few months following some pretty serious charges that emerged in January tying him to a deadly car crash back in December.

Kyren Lacy was set to appear before a grand jury on Monday, April 14 in a process that would inevitably decide his legal fate and immediate future.

Lacy was originally arrested for negligent homicide, reckless operation of a moving vehicle, and felony hit-and-run. While he had still been preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft it was unclear if his legal battles would allow him to continue his pursuit of a professional football career, at least in the near term. Then the worst happened late on Saturday, April 12.

Kyren Lacy found dead following police chase

WBRZ News' investigative unit reported that Kyren Lacy had been arguing with family late on Saturday night, pulled a gun, shot the ground, and left. Not too long after that local police attempted to pull Lacy over while he was driving, but he did not comply, resulting in a vehicular police chase.

Ultimately Lacy's car crashed. Then as police approached Lacy's vehicle the officers quickly realized that he had died by an apparent suicide while the authorities were still in pursuit (as ESPN also reported in their post below).

Kyren Lacy was fully expected to be an early selection in the 2025 NFL Draft prior to his legal troubles this offseason. Lacy had played for the LSU Tigers throughout the last three seasons, amassing nearly 1700 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns per game last season, putting together the most impressive year of any offensive playmaker for LSU.

Lacy was subsequently mourned by many following the news of his passing. The LSU Tigers football program, former teammates, players all around the sport, and most importantly his parents. His father in particular shared a heartbreaking message to parents everywhere:

"Young parents, start talking to your kids at a very early age and make sure they are confident and comfortable confiding in you. Don't be cool with, "I'm Alright, or I'm good", when you know deep down something isn't right. Mental Health is real, and for the most part, it's invisible, don't ignore the signs, even if they may seem small. Our lives have changed forever and this will never be okay, but God needed my baby more than he was needed here. This has to be the biggest pill our families have had to swallow, but I know the love and compassion in our families will get us through. This will never get easier, but we'll learn to live with it. Check on your kids' mental!"
