Former Miami Hurricanes standout and NFL defensive end Allen Bailey has died at the age of 37. He was found dead on October 20 at his home in Florida by his wife.

His brother, Alford Bailey Jr., told TMZ that the family believes he died of natural causes. No official cause of death has been released.

Bailey was born on March 25, 1989, on Sapelo Island, Georgia, a remote barrier island community.

He grew up in the small Hog Hammock settlement and took a daily ferry to the mainland to attend McIntosh County Academy, where he played football despite limited resources.

The unique background helped shape a player known for toughness and athleticism, later nicknamed “The Hulk” for his powerful frame.

At the University of Miami from 2007 to 2010, Bailey played in 50 games and recorded 107 tackles, 19 sacks, and 31 tackles for loss.

He earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2009 and second-team recognition in 2010, establishing himself as a disruptive edge presence for the Hurricanes.

Selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round (86th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft, Bailey spent eight seasons in Kansas City before finishing his career with the Atlanta Falcons in 2019–20.

Over 133 regular-season games (70 starts), he totaled 248 tackles, 22 sacks, 40 tackles for loss, and seven fumble recoveries (one returned for a touchdown). His best season came in 2018 with the Chiefs, when he posted a career-high six sacks.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid described Bailey as one of his favorite players and “a great kid,” adding, “Way too young, obviously.”

The organization called him “an excellent teammate, generous man, and kind soul.” Former teammates, including Colin McCarthy from Miami and Chiefs alumni, shared tributes highlighting his character and impact.

Patrick Mahomes recalled Bailey as one of the first players he encountered after being drafted, underscoring the veteran’s presence in the locker room.

After his playing days, Bailey focused on youth development through the Allen Bailey Foundation, which offered football camps and mentoring.

His journey from a ferry-dependent island upbringing to a decade-long NFL career left a lasting mark on those who played alongside him and the communities he represented.
