Former NFL Star Rips Media's Treatment Of Deion Sanders

Does Colorado head coach Deion Sanders receive unfair treatment from the media? At least one Heisman Trophy winner believes the answer to that question is a resounding yes.

Last season, Sanders led Colorado to a 9-4 record and appearance in the Alamo Bowl. So far, this year hasn't gone according to plan. Colorado is 3-6 and coming off back-to-back losses of at least 35 points. Following last Saturday's loss to Arizona, he refused to let any of his players speak to the media.

It was later revealed by Brian Howell that Colorado players and coaches won't be made available to the media before this Saturday's game against West Virginia.

Earlier this week, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III defended Sanders for the way he has handled this season. He also called out the media for refusing to give the Hall of Famer grace for all of his struggles off the field.

"When a coach has health complications they are given grace by the media and the public because they are understanding of what they are fighting through. Deion Sanders he’s not been afforded that same empathy at Colorado this year," Griffin said. "Despite being diagnosed with cancer, having his bladder removed and having a procedure in the middle of the season to alleviate blood clots, the tear downs of the man and his program have been relentless. The X’s and the O’s have to improve, but we can’t forget the human element of what has happened in Deion Sanders life this year."

Griffin continued, "So at 3-6. Colorado, now is not the time to give up on Coach Prime. Now is the time to stand tall with him."

Changes coming for Colorado?

According to USA Today, Sanders has demoted offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

“Colorado football coach Deion Sanders stripped play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur after the Buffaloes lost at Utah Oct. 25, demoting him to quarterbacks coach before the team got beat again last week against Arizona,” Brent Schrotenboer said.

Maybe, just maybe, a change to the offensive staff is what Colorado needs to snap out of this funk.

Kickoff for Colorado vs. West Virginia is a 12 p.m. ET.
