Former Notre Dame star continues to prove doubters wrong and NFL evaluators look even sillier following his most recent reward
Michael Caterina / USA TODAY NETWORK

When NFL Draft evaluators go about their scouting reports every year, there is often a high preference on the super athletes. We tend to marvel about raw athleticism, and the “athletic freaks” that seem to defy the standards for what human beings are capable of physically. That attraction is understandable, but it also can be a flawed fixation.

That flaw was evident when former Notre Dame star running Kyren Williams came out during the 2022 NFL Draft. He was overlooked due to his below average size and straight line speed, and a lot of analysts completely overlooked the natural ability as a runner, passing game impact, and production. During his two years as a starter for the Fighting Irish, Williams rushed for 2,127 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also added another 672 yards and four scores on 77 receptions during those two seasons.

Williams accomplished all of that while running behind a below average Notre Dame offensive line, and playing under offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Due to his poor testing and measurables, Williams eventually fell to the fifth round of that NFL Draft. Luckily for him, he landed in the perfect situation with the Los Angeles Rams and head coach Sean McVay.

Similarly to his college career, Williams didn’t get a ton of opportunities during his first season. Over the last two seasons, however, Williams has developed into a workhorse for the Rams offense. He was rewarded with a new contract on Tuesday, which included $33 million for three years, and $23 million fully guaranteed.

With that new contract, this makes Williams the sixth highest paid running back in the NFL with an average of $11 million earnings per year. He is just behind Green Bay Packers star Josh Jacobs on that list, and ahead of Minnesota Vikings standout Aaron Jones. That’s pretty good company for a player who has constantly been counted out and doubted.

For Notre Dame fans, there isn’t much surprise that Williams has turned into a really good football player for the Rams. During his two years as a starter, the 5-9, 199-pound runner has managed to rush for 2,443 yards and 26 touchdowns. Williams has also hauled in another 66 receptions for 388 yards and five more scores. He is also one of the very best pass protectors in the entire league.

With Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price heading to the NFL soon, and a young stable of Aneyas Williams, Kedren Young, and Nolan James Jr., the Fighting Irish look like they are about to go on an unreal run at the position. Notre Dame owes a lot to the foundation, and standard that Williams has started over the last couple of seasons.
