The most recent news in college football—at least in the Big Ten—centers around Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, who has been suspended for two games. This is a self-imposed punishment by Michigan in response to the ongoing sign-stealing scandal.

Interestingly, Moore is scheduled to miss the third and fourth games of the season but will be allowed to coach in Weeks 1 and 2, including a matchup against Oklahoma. The punishment is said to be for Moore deleting text messages exchanged with Connor Stalions.

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer recently called for harsher punishments for coaches who lie to the NCAA. He referenced Dez Bryant’s suspension as an example of an unfair situation involving a player.

“If you lie as a college football coach to the NCAA, in my personal opinion, you’re finished,” Meyer said on a recent episode of The Triple Option podcast. “You’re done. That’s not sending a text message, that’s not going to lunch with someone you’re not supposed to—those are Level III violations and all that nonsense. But when they’ve got you, and they ask, ‘Did you do this?’ and you refuse to cooperate or you lie—in my very strong opinion, you’re finished coaching in Division I college football.”

While Meyer’s comments aren’t directed specifically at Moore, they reflect his general stance on how such situations should be handled. Historically, the NCAA has tended to impose harsher penalties on players than on coaches.

The Michigan sign-stealing scandal will likely remain a major storyline in college football over the coming months. Naturally, many Ohio State fans will be watching closely.
