The new year of 2025 hasn't been going swimmingly for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks thus far. It started on New Year's Day with a blowout loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl, and it continued a couple of days later with the news that 5-star true freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele would be transferring out of the program after just two weeks with the team.
The word is that Sagapolutele, who was the No. 4 QB in the 2025 class according to On3, came to Eugene with a hope of competing for the starting job as a true freshman. However, after practicing with the team for two weeks leading up to the Rose Bowl, he saw how good sophomore Dante Moore was, and decided to transfer to another school where he could play right away.
On Sunday, we found out which school that would be.
Sagapolutele will reportedly be transferring to the California Golden Bears for his freshman season. Before signing with the Ducks, Sagapolutele was committed to Cal for quite some time, but he flipped to Oregon on signing day. Now he will have a chance to compete for the starting job in Berkeley and play as a true freshman.
Meanwhile, the Ducks are in a great position at the QB spot, with Moore projected to be one of the top young passers in the nation next year. The former 5-star QB in the 2023 class started as a freshman for UCLA, but transferred to Oregon after one year with the hopes of being developed and taking over for the Ducks after Dillon Gabriel left.
Sagapolutele, who stands at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, is expected to be an exciting young player who will get to cut his teeth with the Golden Bears as a true freshman and hopefully realize his high ceiling.
