Breaking news out of Ann Arbor as the Wolverines prepare to close out 2024 with another splash in the transfer portal.

Michigan's 2024 passing struggles have been well-documented. Issues at quarterback certainly played an outsized role in the Wolverines' 7-5 finish; however, Michigan's QBs shouldn't take all the credit for the team's offensive woes. It's clear that the Wolverines' receiving corps needs as much reinforcement as possible. Now, in a move that's both strengthened their roster and weakened a conference rival, Michigan landed former Indiana Hoosier Donaven McCulley

With his imposing 6-foot-5 frame, McCulley has shown that he can produce at a high level. While he was largely sidelined in 2024 - appearing in just 3 games - McCulley had an explosive 2023, catching 48 catches for 644 yards and 6 touchdowns. That breakout season earned him fourth-team All-Big Ten honors and an honorable mention recognition from conference coaches.

McCulley brings a wide scope of football knowledge to Michigan. Beginning his college career as a quarterback - making history as just the third true freshman QB to start for Indiana, following in the footsteps of Tre Roberson and Zander Diamont - McCulley is not only an impressive route runner, but also has knowledge of the pressures that challenge a starting QB.

In an exclusive conversation with On3's EJ Holland, McCulley revealed the key factors behind his decision to transfer to the Wolverines:

"I just felt like coach (Sherrone) Moore, coach (Ron) Bellamy and everything Michigan stood for made it the right place for me. The opportunity that's in front of me is a great opportunity. As long as I take advantage of it, everything that I want out of it is going to come out of it."

McCulley detailed how Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore took a hands-on approach with the senior WR, investing personal time to McCulley throughout the recruitment process:

"We talked a lot over the recruiting process. We weren't just talking about football. He would just call me, and we would chop it up for 30 minutes. As the process went along, we talked some more. We talked football. I really liked what he stood for."

Looking ahead, McCulley projects as an X-receiver who could develop into an essential piece in Michigan's revamped aerial attack. With new quarterbacks Mikey Keene or Bryce Underwood taking the helm, McCulley should see more looks this upcoming season. His quarterback background and proven ability to produce when given opportunities suggest there's still significant untapped potential in his game. After a frustrating 2024 season, this fresh start in Ann Arbor could be exactly what McCulley needs to return to his 2023 form - or perhaps exceed it.
