The sudden parting of ways between the Tennessee Vols and quarterback Nico Iamaleava is the biggest topic in college sports right now.
So it's not a surprise that numerous coaches and players were asked this past weekend (when several spring football games took place) about Iamaleava's shocking departure from Tennessee.
Former Vols quarterback Harrison Bailey, who transferred to Florida earlier this offseason for his final season of eligibility, was asked about Iamaleava on Saturday after the Gators' spring game.
Bailey spent two seasons at Tennessee before transferring to UNLV for a season and then Louisville for two seasons. The Georgia native, who also noted on Saturday that he grew up rooting for Florida, was at Tennessee during the first year (2021) of the Josh Heupel era.
"I didn't even know until some of the Gator fans were running up to me and telling me," said Bailey when asked about Iamaleava and Tennessee parting ways. "It's a tricky -- I don't know the full situation, so I can't really comment too much on it. But I've met Nico before and I know how Coach (Josh) Heupel and the group is. They're all great people. I have nothing negative to say about them. Maybe the situation just wasn't right at the time and they parted ways."
"When I first entered college, there was no such thing as the portal, which is interesting to say" added Bailey. "It's a new day and age of football. I'm glad I'm getting out of it, [but] it's helped me a lot I will say."
These are unprecedented times for college football. And while it's great to see athletes having more options, the current structure of college football (which is, essentially, no structure) is unsustainable. It feels like the whole sport is careening off the rails unless someone steps in to save the day.
