Browns GM makes wild statement on team's quarterback situation

The Cleveland Browns plan to do minor trimming on their quarterback depth chart. The Browns have six quarterbacks on the roster before they have to trim the team down to 53 players on Tuesday.

In an interview with the NFL Network on Saturday, Browns general manager Andrew Berry suggested that the team would keep four quarterbacks on the roster (Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel).

The Browns will likely place Deshaun Watson on season-ending injured reserve and cut Tyler Huntley.

“Honestly, it’s not much of a decision for us," Berry said, via Mike Garafolo's post on X. "All four guys have done what we’ve asked. … We have a room that we like all the guys in there. We don’t really see that as a problem. We more see it as an opportunity.”

Keeping four quarterbacks on the roster feels wild in a league that typically keeps two (or at most, three) signal-callers on the 53-man roster.

It makes no sense to keep extra bodies on the roster when those spots can be given to special teams contributor, who can help keep starters and rotating players healthy during a long regular season.

Now, the Browns might not have much of a choice, but that's different than seeing this as a good opportunity. The Browns signed Pickett to a $2.6 million deal this spring. Flacco has a $4 million deal. Cleveland spent two draft picks on Gabriel and Sanders.

The Browns need to find a trade partner for one of these quarterbacks instead of releasing them on Tuesday. However, that means finding a trade target that needs a starting-caliber quarterback.

No spots are open right now, and Cleveland might be forced into waiting until injuries happen during the regular season before it can trim its quarterback depth chart to three on the 53-man roster.
