A former Tennessee Vols quarterback was on the positive end of some comments from Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders this week.
Coach Prime is never afraid to hold players accountable, but he'll hand out praise when it's deserved, too.
And that's exactly what Sanders did this week with former Vols quarterback Kaidon Salter.
Salter, who is in his first season at Colorado after spending the last four seasons at Liberty, was complimented by Sanders for his reaction to Buffaloes running back Micah Welch's fumble in a win against Wyoming.
Welch gained 44 yards on an impressive run, but he fumbled at the end of the run (which Wyoming recovered).
Salter immediately went to the sideline to give Welch some words of encouragement.
“That’s the things that we want,” said Sanders of Salter's sideline moment with Welch. “That’s the things that we desire and you know, there ain’t too many people to make light of, but that’s what a quarterback is expected to do. The things we’re happy to see and elated to see. It goes a long way with your teammates -- when in a time of disparity that you’re able to pick that guy up and place him back. Because guess what? Two backs went down and we needed him back in the game to do his thing.”
Sanders, one of the greatest competitors of all time, is spot on. Just because a player makes a mistake, doesn't mean you just give up on them, or ridicule them. You're likely going to need that player again at some point in the game. And you'll need a confident version of him, not a timid version.
If you're having trouble remembering Salter at Tennessee, well, he wasn't there for long.
Salter signed with the Vols during the 2021 recruiting cycle (he signed during the early signing period in December 2020, when Jeremy Pruitt was still Tennessee's head coach).
The Texas native ran into some off-the-field issues shortly after arriving at Tennessee. He was suspended by Josh Heupel (Heupel was hired to replace Pruitt a month after Salter arrived) for a drug related offense, which caused him to miss spring practice.
Salter was dismissed from the program later that summer after he ran into trouble again shortly after getting reinstated to the team.
It's unfortunate how Salter's time at Tennessee went, but kudos to him for getting his career on track after the setback in Knoxville.
