Former Texas QB Shouts Out Arch Manning

As the Longhorns beat San Jose State 38-7 on Saturday, quarterback Arch Manning bounced back from a poor performance against Ohio State, passing for 295 yards and four touchdowns.

Manning made his way through the game, albeit with some struggles, but did so while also earning some recognition on social media from former Texas quarterback and Heisman winner Vince Young.

Young played for the Longhorns in the mid-2000s and was the last quarterback to lead Texas to a national championship. Young is iconic for his late-game heroics in the 2006 Rose Bowl that won the Longhorns the national title.

Now, in 2025, Manning is looking to lead Texas to a national title before the 20th anniversary of Young’s.

After a disappointing showing at Ohio State in Week 1, Young gave Manning some words of encouragement ahead of the Longhorns’ matchup with the Spartans on Saturday.

His words might have meant something to Manning, considering the day that Manning had on Saturday. After starting 2-5, Manning got hot, completing eight straight passes. It continued from there, and he finished the game, throwing 19-30 for 295 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. He also recorded 23 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

Manning’s showcase of his speed and mobility was ever so slightly reminiscent of Young, who was known for his dangerous abilities as a scrambling quarterback.

Young liked what he saw from Manning on the ground and took the time to acknowledge it during the game.

Manning, Young, and fans alike will all hope that Manning will be able to not only recreate but continue to improve upon this performance that he had against the Spartans, both in the air and on the ground.

The Longhorns will now face UTEP on Saturday. The game will also take place in Austin’s DKR, and kick off at 3:15 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the game on SEC Network, as Texas faces a team that ESPN analytics give a 1% chance to beat the Longhorns.
