A former top-10 quarterback entered the transfer portal after one season with his previous program.

That quarterback was former Florida State and San Diego State player AJ Duffy. On Friday, On3's Pete Nakos reported that Duffy had signed with Division II program New Haven.

Duffy arrived at San Diego State this offseason but could not find playing time in the quarterback room behind Danny O'Neill and Javance Tupouata-Johnson. Duffy did not play in a single game for the Aztecs this season.

First-year head coach Sean Lewis led San Diego State in 2024. Lewis ended his first season in charge with a 3-9 record. Lewis took over for former head coach Brady Hoke, who retired after the 2023 season.

Duffy was a former four-star prospect in the 2022 class, attending high school powerhouse IMG Academy. He was the No. 10 quarterback in the 2022 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings

Duffy started his high school career at Rancho Verde in Moreno, California. However, after the 2020 season canceled his junior season, he transferred to IMG Academy.

Duffy played in four games with the Seminoles, accounting for 26 passing yards and one touchdown. After two seasons at Florida State, he transferred to San Diego State, closer to home.

The former Florida State quarterback joins O'Neill and Tupouata-Johnson in the transfer portal. Other key losses for the Aztecs include running back Kenan Christon, tight end Logan Turner and safety Josh Hunter.

After reaching the Mountain West Championship Game in 2021, San Diego State has had a rough last few years. After finishing 12-2 that season, the Aztecs went 7-6 in 2022 and 4-8 last season.

The program went to two bowl games in Hoke's tenure from 2020-23.
