Jack Nicklaus is famous for holding the record with 18 major golf titles. The true lifers in the sport get just as geeked out at the 19 times he came in second. He was always in the mix.
The true brilliance of Alabama under Nick Saban wasn’t just the six national titles. It was the three national championship losses, along with being one iconic play away in several other years from almost certainly adding three, maybe four, to the pile. Bama was always in the mix.
Georgia won two straight national titles under Kirby Smart in 2021 and 2022. It was one play away from winning another in 2017, and had the brutal luck of 2023 being the year before the CFP expansion, otherwise it would've come close to taking that, too. (BTW, for all the belly-aching over Florida State not getting in, Georgia had the real beef.)
Georgia is now always in the mix.

No, I won't suggest that last year’s team was one final first half play in the SEC Championship away from winning it all - the Carson Beck injury seemed to wake the team up in the win over Texas. There were issues with last year’s team, and …
It won the SEC Championship, was the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff, and was at least in the building with a chance to compete in the tournament.
Smart has won 11 or more games in seven of the last eight seasons - there were only ten games in 2020 - and in each of those seven, either the Bulldogs won the national title, or you can point to one play or moment in each season that kept them from getting there.
So when there’s any suggestion that Georgia is coming off a down year, or it’s slipping a bit, or it might not get to at least ten wins this season - you want to go under on that 9.5 win total the world is gifting you? BE … MY … GUEST - you know how this is going to work.
Yeah, there’s a big question mark about whether or not Gunner Stockton can be the quarterback to get it done. And sure, the defense had a down year by the program’s impossibly high standards. And the offense has to be far more explosive. And …
There are still oodles of NFL starters all over the place, no one else appears to be at a whole other level talent-wise like Ohio State was last season, and the schedule should work out just fine.
Except for the SEC opener at Tennessee, and the Party against Florida, all the big games are at home, or at least in the state of Georgia.
So just assume it’ll be another great year with 11 or more wins. Assume a spot in the College Football Playoff. And assume Georgia will be deep in the mix for the national championship.
