Georgia gives assistant coaches substantial raises

After losing offensive coordinator Todd Monken to the NFL, the Georgia Bulldogs decided it was wise to invest in its remaining assistant coaches.

According to The Athletic, UGA gave every assistant coach aside from co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Will Muschamp, who’s still collecting a check from South Carolina, a raise of $50,000 or more for 2023.

Co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann received the largest salary boost — $805,000 — bringing his salary up to $1.9 million. The Bulldogs had the No. 9-ranked defense in college football last season, allowing just 292.1 yards of total offense per game, with the top run defense (77.1 yards allowed per game) and second-best scoring defense (12.8 points allowed per game).

New offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who’s also still being paid by Auburn, will draw a $1 million salary — significantly less than the $2.1 million UGA gave to Monken, who joined the Baltimore Ravens in February — but it is expected to rise once he’s no longer being paid by Auburn.

Bobo takes over an offense that was the fifth-best in 2022, averaging 501.1 yards per game, and was tied for fourth in scoring (41.1 points per game), though he will be without top quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist Stetson Bennett, leading rusher Kenny McIntosh and tight end and draft prospect Darnell Washington.
