Zirkel signed with Georgia as part of its 2020 recruiting class, but was never able to claim Georgia's starting place kicker position. During his freshman season in 2020, he lost the kicker job to Jack Podlesny, who he sat behind for three seasons. Entering the 2023 season the Kerrville, Texas native was locked in an intense battle at the position with freshman Peyton Woodring, before Woodring eventually pulled away to become the Bulldogs' starting place kicker. Zirkel, however, did earn duties as Georgia's designated kicker on kickoffs. The redshirt junior served in that role in all 13 games for Georgia and put together a strong season, forcing touchbacks on 62 of his 95 kickoffs. Woodring was made the only field goal he attempted during his time at Georgia, a 21-yard attempt at South Carolina during the 2022 season.
Given that he initially enrolled during the Covid-plagued 2020 season, Zirkel will have two year of eligibility remaining. In his statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), Zirkel also announced that he will stay with the Bulldogs through the Orange Bowl on Dec.30.
