Georgia Suffers 'Significant' Setback on Monday

The Georgia Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Marshall and Austin Peay. Gunner Stockton has played well as the Bulldogs' starting quarterback, throwing for 417 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions while adding a pair of touchdowns via the rushing game.

In Week 3, Georgia's first test of the season comes in the form of an SEC showdown against Tennessee on the road in Knoxville, also known as Rocky Top.

In the 28-6 win over Austin Peay in Week 2, Georgia saw freshman tight end Ethan Barbour leave the game with a gruesome injury. Barbour was carted off the field in Athens and waved to the home crowd.

On Monday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Barbour will undergo surgery and will be out with a "significant" injury.

"He's got a pretty significant ankle injury that he will be dealing with, similar to Rosemy and Rod Robinson," Smart said, via Kipp Adams of 247Sports. "So he will have surgery and he will be out for a little bit.

Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint missed the entire 2020 season with an injury and running back Roderick Robinson is still recovering from an injury he suffered in last year's College Football Playoff game against Notre Dame, so Smart's comparison of Barbour's injury to those is not promising.

Barbour is a Georgia native and a four-star recruit, per 247Sports. While he had yet to record a catch this season, he was playing snaps for the Bulldogs, so this is an unfortunate injury development, especially at this stage in the season.

Georgia's latest depth chart had Barbour as TE3 behind Oscar Delp and Lawson Luckie, respectively.

While Smart didn't give a concrete timeline, Barbour's injury will be worth monitoring, but undergoing surgery and being labeled as a "significant" injury is not encouraging.
