Georgia's OC Todd Monken garnering NFL interest

Fresh off a second national championship, Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken is a hot name for NFL jobs, according to a report by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler didn't mention teams. but there numerous head-coaching jobs open – Colts, Panthers and Broncos, to name a few – for which a new head coach would likely bring in new coordinators.

Several teams are also looking for offensive coordinators after disappointing seasons, such as the Chargers, Commanders and Jets.

Monken guided the Bulldogs' offense in a blowout 65-7 win over TCU in the national title game. Georgia’s offense finished fifth among FBS schools with an average of 501.1 yards per game. The Bulldogs tied for fourth with Alabama with an average of 41.1 points per game.

Monken’s pro-style success in college is not the only aspect that makes him attractive to NFL teams, as he has extensive experience in the pro game. He served as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers between 2016-18 and Cleveland Browns in 2019.

While NFL owners have no problem spending money, the cost to hire Monken will be significant. He makes $2 million at Georgia, and the average NFL offensive coordinator salary reportedly is about $1 million (h/t: NBC Sports Boston).

Any coach or owner who wants to bring Monken on board would likely have to offer a contract to make him among the highest-paid coordinators in the league.

Before the national title game, Monken downplayed any speculation about his coaching future.

“I've learned over the years to not really think about what's next because you don't know that,” he said, per 247Sports.com. “

Former Oregon WR's career may have new life after transfer decision

Ryan Pellum's career with the Oregon Ducks was over before it even started, but it may have new life. The former four-star wideout from Long Beach, California, was ranked as the No. 26 wide receiver in the 2024 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. Pellum took a redshirt last season at Oregon before hitting the transfer portal in January. He was then arrested and charged with assault with use of a firearm after he allegedly pistol-whipped someone in his hometown on Christmas Day in 2024. In June, Pellum was sentenced to probation as part of a plea deal, and now he's trying to get his college football hopes back on track. As such, it's being reported that Pellum will transfer to Delaware State for the 2025 season. Notably, he'll be joining up with former NFL star and three-time Pro Bowler DeSean Jackson, who is heading into his first season as the Hornets' head coach. As a senior in high school, Pellum caught 66 passes for 991 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was at one time committed to USC, but he flipped to Dan Lanning and the Ducks on signing day. Delaware State, located in Dover, Delaware, is an FCS program that is a part of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Hornets went 2-21 over the past two seasons under head coach Lee Hull, who was fired less than two years after he took over the program.

Steelers’ Cam Heyward blasted by former GM amid contract drama

Veteran defensive tackle Cam Heyward is in the middle of a contract dispute with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it’s unclear when it will end. With the regular season quickly approaching, a former NFL general manager went out of his way to blast Heyward over the situation. During an appearance on “93.7 The Fan Wednesday Morning,” former Buffalo Bills general manager and Steelers executive Doug Whaley blasted Heyward for getting into a contract dispute after just signing an extension last offseason. Overall, Whaley believes that Heyward is overstepping his bounds by asking for another revised contract. “Think about this. The 15 years of goodwill Cam Heyward has gained in the public and on the team, it’s smashed over this lack of foresight,” proclaimed Whaley. So to me, it’s an abject failure for Cam. So, I can understand why he has such vitriol from the fans because you should have [done] this before.. In the end, it’s not on the Steelers. This is on Cam Heyward and his camp.” Heyward, who is 36 years old, most recently signed a two-year, $29 million contract with the Steelers. The deal has Cam Heyward with the organization through the 2026-27 campaign. He received $16 million in guaranteed money on the deal with a $14.7 million signing bonus. Last season, the seven-time Pro Bowler put up ridiculous numbers, as he is still regarded as one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. He ended the 2024-25 season with 71 combined tackles (35 solo), 20 quarterback hits, 8.0 sacks, and 12 tackles for a loss. Cam Heyward recently opened up and shared that he feels his performance from last season deserves more pay. The Steelers star also admitted that after originally signing his current contract that he told the front office that he would be back asking for more pay after having an All-Pro season. Heyward did, in fact, have an All-Pro season last year, making it the fourth time in his career that he achieved that feat. Only time will tell if the Steelers give in or not. At the very least, Cam Heyward is a hold-in, as he’s at least arriving at the facility during training camp. However, that is more so to avoid being fined.

Milwaukee Brewers: Willy Adames Gets Brutally Honest About Giants Tailspin Amid Ex-Team’s Historic Run

As his former team, the Milwaukee Brewers, continues to rack up wins, Willy Adames is left searching for answers with the San Francisco Giants, who have lost five games in a row following an 11-1 drubbing at the hands of the San Diego Padres at home on Wednesday. It has been a brutal second half of the season thus far for Adames and the Giants, who have dropped to 10 games outside of first place in the National League West standings. The Giants had a 50.4 percent chance to make the 2025 MLB playoffs on June 15, per FanGraphs. After the sweep at the hands of the Padres, San Francisco is projected to join the postseason party by just 2.8 percent. Meanwhile, the Brewers, who defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday to complete a sweep, are on a 12-game win streak and carry a 100 percent chance to make the postseason, to date. Ex-Milwaukee Brewers star Adames not happy with Giants’ state Adames shared his true feelings about his team, which saw him go 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the loss to San Diego. “It feels like for the last two months, it’s the same story,” Adames said after the series finale loss to the Padres, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. “It feels like for some reason nothing positive is coming. It’s either a jam shot hitting the base with the bases loaded [that was] a double-play ball. Something negative is in the air. We haven’t been able to figure out how to beat it and how to be better out there. It seems that it’s been the same story. Added Adames: “It sucks. It’s bad, because we have a really good team in here but it hasn’t gone our way lately.” Adames, who played four seasons with the Brewers before signing a seven-year, $182 million contract with the Giants in December, is batting just .223/.309/.393, so far in his first year with San Francisco.

NASCAR makes decision on victory celebrations after Connor Zilisch fall

One of NASCAR's brightest young stars in Connor Zilisch could miss time after falling in Victory Lane following his victory in the Aug. 9 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen. Zilisch slipped on the door of his No. 88 Chevrolet before suffering a hard fall in Victory Lane and breaking his collarbone. He underwent successful surgery on Tuesday, with a timetable for his return yet to be announced. Even in light of the viral incident, NASCAR will not restrict drivers from celebrating in a certain way moving forward, per NASCAR's Mike Forde. Drivers have long climbed on the roof or door of their vehicles on the frontstretch and in Victory Lane to celebrate victories, but accidents stemming from that action are rare. After winning the Cup Series race at Watkins Glen on Aug. 10, Shane van Gisbergen — who will likely be Zilisch's Cup Series teammate at Trackhouse Racing in 2026 — carefully climbed out of his No. 88 Chevrolet — something he does regularly, not just in response to Zilisch's fall. Zilisch did not race in the Cup Series race at Watkins Glen due to his injury. The Xfinity Series will return on Aug. 22 at Daytona International Speedway, with Zilisch leading the regular-season standings by seven points.
