Alabama had a dismal showing in its opener against Florida State, losing 31-17. The loss has raised countless questions about the future of the once-dominant program. A bright spot for the Crimson Tide was senior wide receiver Germie Bernard. Despite a lackluster performance from the offense as a whole, Bernard hauled in eight catches for a career-high 146 yards. Alabama is more than familiar with elite wide receivers, with Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle, to name a few. Bernard had a solid 2024 season, but looks to raise his draft stock with a breakout 2025 campaign. He showed why he’ll be playing on Sundays in Week 1, but how will he be utilized in the NFL?
Bernard was a four-star recruit coming out of Liberty (Nevada) and the 38th-ranked wide receiver in the Class of 2022. He committed to Michigan State and caught seven passes for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns as a freshman. Bernard transferred to Washington for his sophomore season, joining a loaded receiving corps in 2023. He had 34 catches for 419 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskies made it to the National Championship. Kalen DeBoer left for Alabama for the 2024 season, and Bernard followed. He finished his junior year with 50 catches for 794 yards and two touchdowns. There were flashes of a dominant wideout, including a critical 34-yard touchdown to seal the win against South Carolina. Bernard had his first 100-yard game in the Iron Bowl against Auburn.
Reliable hands are one of the most essential characteristics for a wide receiver to have. Bernard checks this box, as his hands are as consistent as anyone in the nation. His ball-tracking ability is phenomenal, being able to adjust on the fly and come down with contested catches. Bernard excels at finding the soft spots in zone coverage and sitting in open space. He is at his best on intermediate routes and is a dangerous threat between the 20-yard lines. Bernard can win over the middle and is a reliable target in the more congested part of the field. His route running is polished, and he has the frame needed to win in man coverage.
Bernard doesn’t have blazing speed, which gives him a ceiling as a true deep threat. While his technique is impressive, he isn’t a player who generates a ton of explosive plays. The lack of top-end speed limits production after the catch. Bernard’s red zone impact is also a concern, having just two receiving touchdowns in each of his first three seasons.
Few players in the country did more to improve their draft stock than Bernard on opening weekend. If Alabama is going to turn its season around, he will be a vital reason. His sure hands and effectiveness in the intermediate passing game provide value in sustaining drives. Bernard is familiar with Ryan Grubb’s offense from his season at Washington in 2023. His lack of elite speed gives him a ceiling as a prospect, but he should still find a role in an NFL offense as a Z-receiver or in the slot. Entering 2025, Bernard was projected as an early day-three selection. If he maintains the production he had against Florida State, then Bernard should cement himself as a day-two pick.
