The hype leading up to the debut of North Carolina coach Bill Belichick on Monday night in Chapel Hill was palpable, and the Tar heels did little to tamp it down. Not only was the legendary NFL coach on the sidelines, but the team had luxury suites packed with big names in Tar Heels history: Michael Jordan, Roy Williams, Lawrence Taylor, Mia Hamm and more.
Then the game started. After an opening touchdown drive, things quickly unraveled for Belichick and the Heels, as TCU forced three turnovers and outgained UNC in yardage, 542-222, on its way to a 48-14 blowout.
And while there were other major disappointments to come out of an action-packed Week 1 in the sport, the consensus seems to be that no one had a worse week than Belichick.
Is Michael Jordan, Roy Williams, and Lawrence Taylor the greatest “box” of all time?

When former Alabama and NFL quarterback Greg McElroy, now a CFB analyst, was asked for the person or team who had the worst showing in the opening week of the season, he did not hesitate to point to Belichick.
"It was Bill Belichick," McElroy said on ESPN's "Get Up." "I mean, the build-up, if you watched the pregame show, you would not even know who North Carolina was playing. … To go out, to set the stage, to have the energy in the building and to go out and get absolutely eviscerated on the field was very concerning.
"And the worst issue was, from a talent standpoint, we know they have work to do, but from a scheme standpoint, they left their corners on islands, they allowed big plays, they did not make second-half adjustments, they were not good stopping the run. I think it was a referendum on the staff. They didn’t really give their players a great chance and then when those players did get chances they made really poor decisions."
His ESPN colleague, Heather Dinich, agreed.
"He fell flat on his face," Dinich said. "He said he was outcoached by Sonny Dykes. This couldn’t have been more of a disappointing performance."
It's not looking good for North Carolina from here. Belichick was brought in to replace longtime coach Mack Brown, who was the UNC coach from 1988-97 before he went to Texas. Brown returned in 2019, and though the Tar Heels were not a playoff-caliber outfit, they were 44-33 in Brown's second stint, with five bowl appearances.
TCU was 9-4 last season and was ranked No. 4 in the Big 12 by ESPN in the preseason.
The Tar Heels do not have a bad schedule, and certainly have winnable games ahead against Charlotte and Richmond, before taking on Central Florida and, after that, beginning the ACC schedule. The Tar Heels are fortunate to not have Miami, SMU or Florida State on the schedule, but will face Clemson in Week 5.
McElroy and Dinich predicted just "four or five" wins for Belichick at North Carolina this year, which would go down as a massive disappointment.
