Happy Birthday to a Big 12 Legend!

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is celebrating his 56th birthday today, marking another milestone in one of the longest and most colorful coaching tenures in college football.

Now entering his 21st season at the helm in Stillwater, Gundy remains one of the Big 12’s most consistent winners and one of its most recognizable personalities.

Since taking over the Cowboys in 2005, Gundy has led the program to 17 bowl appearances, seven double-digit win seasons, and a Big 12 Championship in 2011. His 166 career wins rank among the best in conference history, and his ability to keep Oklahoma State relevant in an evolving Big 12 has made him a constant presence in the league’s storylines.

Beyond the numbers, Gundy has given the sport some unforgettable moments. There was the now-legendary “I’m a man, I’m 40!” press conference rant in 2007, delivered in defense of his players and now etched into college football lore. Over the years, he’s added to his highlight reel with his trademark mullet era, tongue-in-cheek media remarks, and an occasional jab at in-state rival Oklahoma.

Gundy’s style, equal parts competitive edge and approachable humor, has kept Oklahoma State both respected and entertaining. In a conference that has seen coaching changes at nearly every other stop, his longevity has provided the Cowboys with stability few programs can match.

As he turns 56, Gundy is preparing for another season in a Big 12 that has changed dramatically since his early days, yet still offers Oklahoma State a path to contend. If history is any guide, he’ll continue to rack up wins, keep the Cowboys in the mix, and add a few more memorable quotes along the way.
