Herm Edwards out as Arizona State head coach

After four-plus years as the head football coach, Herm Edwards is out at Arizona State.

The school announced on Sunday that by mutual decision Edwards has relinquished his duties as head coach.

Edwards took over the Arizona State program prior to the 2018 season, and in parts of five seasons led the team to a 26-20 record and three bowl appearances. That includes an 8-5 record and Las Vegas Bowl loss to Wisconsin a year ago.

In three games to start this season the Sun Devils are 1-2 and coming off of a bad home loss to Eastern Michigan at home on Saturday. Their only win of the season so far was a 40-3 win over FCS Northern Arizona.

After starting the 2021 season with a 5-1 record, Arizona State is just 4-6 in the 10 games since.

Its next two games are against nationally ranked teams Utah and USC to open the Pac-12 portion of the schedule.

Prior to joining Arizona State, Edwards was a long-time coach in the NFL with the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.
