As everyone probably expected, the media swarmed around new Texas starting quarterback Arch Manning during his interview availability at SEC Media Day this week. The offseason SEO king, Manning has been constantly talked about over the last several months, both on TV, podcasts, and in print media. It doesn't hurt to be the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning for exposure purposes, and neither does being extremely talented.
While Manning was peppered by the media, he was asked about his offseason, ascension as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns, and other miscellaneous topics. The 6-4, 220-pound passer was also asked about his relationship with his teammate, Texas star safety Michael Taaffe. It centered around their competitiveness, and who wins out in that department.
"Whew, that’s pretty close," Manning said. "He’s like annoying competitive though. He’ll pick up a piece of trash, and be like, “I picked up the trash.” I’m like, “Okay.” He picked me off last week in two minute drill, which was annoying, but we are both pretty competitive. It gets competitive on the golf course too."
For people who haven't followed the career of Taaffe, he began as a walk-on for the team. After serving as a key reserve during his first couple of seasons, Taaffe has been stellar for the Longhorns the last two years. He heads into the 2025 college football season with 152 total tackles, five interceptions, 13 pass breakups, two tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.
The 6-0, 189-pound defender joined Manning along with linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. as the representatives for the Texas Longhorns. Taaffe has become a fan favorite for Texas fans for many reasons, and at the highest level, his tenacious style of play. He is an outstanding player, leader, and spokesperson for what it means to earn everything you are given.
Was it shocking for everyone to hear how competitive Taaffe was? It gets magnified due to it coming from Manning's lips, but that isn't shocking news. If you pop on the Longhorn defense this fall, you can bet that No. 16 will be all over the field for Texas.
