Former Florida Gators quarterback and head coach Steve Spurrier isn't best known for winning a Heisman Trophy in 1966 or a national championship in 1996. He's best known for being a quote machine, and he gave another banger quote at the ripe age of 80.
During his latest appearance on the Another Dooley Noted Podcast , the Head Ball Coach had some choice words about Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning and how the media has seemingly crowned both him and the team.
"Most people are picking Texas to win the SEC in football. They've got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman (Trophy), too. My question is, if he was this good, how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year? He was a seventh round pick?"
What's really interesting about Spurrier making these comments is his history as a head coach. The Head Ball Coach was never shy about replacing his quarterback during a game, let alone a drive.
He famously rotated Doug Johnson and Jesse Palmer on a play-by-play basis and has always fostered competition. When Rex Grossman was in the midst of his Heisman Trophy runner-up season in 2001, he fostered competition with him and Brock Berlin, who is the number one offensive recruit in the history of the program.
“One guy is struggling? Give the other guy a chance,” Spurrier said.
Last year, it was a big talking point surrounding both Manning and Ewers, as he couldn't put things together at nearly the level that he should. Ewers is the highest-rated recruit of all-time and couldn't put back-to-back great games together. Manning was also a very highly rated recruit, and that was a big reason why the discussion existed in the first place.
The other element was this: is Manning that good if he couldn't take over for Ewers? Was it something that head coach Steve Sarkisian believed in staying with the veteran? There are some coaches who believe in doing that.
“You only have to ask Coach Sark (Sarkisian) how come you played that one instead of this one. Hopefully he’ll say ‘because we thought he was better than that one.’ Isn’t that why you play one guy and not the other?”
Everyone is putting all their eggs in the Manning basket because of his recruiting pedigree and the fact that his last name is Manning. Will he be able to live up to it? Who knows, but Spurrier, like most of us, has doubts.
