Hugh Freeze Refuses To Apologize For 'Controversial' Hobby

As the Auburn Tigers prepare for their third season under Hugh Freeze this fall, the AU coach has received his share of criticism for being spotted on the golf course more than the practice field.

That subject was broached once again during Freeze's recent appearance on David Pollack's "See Ball Get Ball," where the former Ole Miss/Liberty HC defended how he spends his time away from the facility amid reports that he played golf 10 times in the month of June.

"You know, everybody seems to like to talk about my golf game. … I do love golf. I enjoy playing. But what people don't realize is, you know, I assure you that I never missed a camp day or a recruiting day," Freeze said.

"But if camp got over at three o'clock one day, and Jill [Freeze's wife] and I go out at 4:30, we absolutely might do that," he admitted. "And I'm not apologizing for that part of it. But my focus is 100% on getting Auburn in that win column this fall."

The Tigers are 11-14 heading into Year 3 of the Hugh Freeze era — which isn't the return on investment the program expected when he was stockpiling talent in Oxford or leading the Flames to a 10-1 record in the middle of COVID.

And with a number of tough tests against the SEC starting with Oklahoma on Sept. 20, it's going to take more than a Nike rebrand to get the Tigers over the top.

The recruiting trail hasn't been the kindest to Auburn either thus far, leading many to wonder how Freeze plans to land four and five-star recruits while working on his handicap.

The Tigers open toe season on the road vs. Baylor where they'll attempt to get off to a better start than they did in 2024.
