Every Illinois Football fan knew that running back would be a strength of this current team. Sophomore Kaden Feagin has proven he can be a lead back and impressed during the 2023 season. Redshirt junior Aidan Laughery was a great recruiting win and has sown flashes of being the perfect compliment to Feagin’s power. Additionally, there is adequate depth in the backfield. Josh McCray is a veteran who is looking to rebound from some injury-plagued seasons. Additionally, Sophomore Jordan Anderson also has the tools to succeed in Bielema’s “power-back” mold.

However, despite these four players, there is one other running back that has really stood out over the first three games. True Freshman, Ca’lil Valentine.

A natural

It all started during week 2 vs Kansas. Valentine was the running back in the fourth quarter and helped gain a key first down to prolong the Illini’s drive on offense. The true freshman showed outstanding poise and wiggle in a high-pressure situation. In week 3 vs Central Michigan, Valentine recorded 5 rushes for 53 yards including a 22-yard carry. Illinois Football has shown a propensity to rely heavily on their running backs. Despite all the talent in the room, Valentine’s early success has been a pleasant surprise.
