As the calendar turns to May tomorrow, what better time to identify programs that are struggling with their Class of 2027 recruiting. While some aren’t a surprise, there are a few that make less sense. Illinois falls into the later category.

At the conclusion of the 2025 season, Illinois was considered to be on the right track. Head coach Bret Bielema led the program to a 19-7 record over the last two seasons with victories in the Citrus Bowl and Music City Bowl. Amazingly, the 19 wins during this two-year stretch is the most in program history, topping the 18 in 1901-1902, 1902-1903 and 1989-1990.

So how and why do the Illini only have one commitment on April 29th?

That commitment is four-star cornerback Justin Johnson (Evanston, IL), who made his decision on March 4th. The Illini did have another commitment, four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati (Salt Lake City, UT), but he flipped to Michigan two weeks. So, that leaves Johnson alone on commitment island.

This makes May and June vital for the program. Official visit season is quickly approaching, which can change the trajectory of a recruiting class in only one weekend. However, this slow start puts the Illini and Coach Bielema behind the eight ball.

An argument can be made that Illinois is aiming at more top-level recruits, which leads to more patience, plus they are likely to sign a smaller high school class. But even with these scenarios, they’ve put themselves in an unkind position.

They’ll get out of this position if they can reel in some of their top targets. These include four-star offensive tackle Cameron Wagner (St. Joseph, IL), four-star defensive tackle Brayden Parks (Chicago, IL), three-star linebacker Sean Rice (Evergreen Park, IL), three-star linebacker Jahmiere Daniels-Portis (Springfield, OH), three-star offensive tackle Soren Fifer (Morton, IL) and three-star cornerback Trezavant  Boyd (Miami, FL).

A great deal of recruiting is about momentum. The Illini put themselves in a position to have that after two winning seasons, but surprisingly it is now missing. Now it is up to Coach Bielema to get it back, which will have to happen in the next two months.
