2026 NFL Draft: First-round grades

The NFL first round is in the books. The first night saw plenty of drama and unexpected decisions. These are the grades of each pick coming out of Round 1.

1 of 32

1. Las Vegas Raiders - Fernando Mendoza, QB: A

Robert Goddin / USA Today Sports Images

Mendoza's addition has been almost a foregone conclusion since the Raiders earned the first overall draft choice. It's also a great fit, as the experienced quarterback has the accuracy and timing to operate new head coach Klint Kubiak's offense. He will need time, but steps into a positive situation as the Raiders have rebuilt their offensive line this offseason and have strong weapons with Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty.

2. New York Jets - David Bailey, EDGE: B

New York Jets - David Bailey, EDGE: B
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

The Jets have continued their defensive rebuild with the addition of Bailey, joining new faces David Onyemata, T'Vondre Sweat, and Demario Davis. He was a highly productive player at Stanford and Texas Tech, though his athleticism might not match the typical No. 2 overall draft choice.

3 of 32

3. Arizona Cardinals - Jeremiyah Love, RB: D

Arizona Cardinals - Jeremiyah Love, RB: D
Michael Clubb / USA Today Sports Images

Arizona adds another foundational offensive weapon to Trey McBride and Marvin Harrison Jr. with the drafting of Love. The dynamic running back out of Notre Dame has the upside to be an immediate difference maker for Mike LaFleur's new offense, though the Cardinals already added former Falcons back Tyler Allgeier this offseason. The Cardinals' roster isn't ready to compete in the tough NFC West, and with the short shelf-life of NFL running backs, addressing another positional need might have been better for the organization.

4 of 32

4. Tennessee Titans - Carnell Tate, WR: B+

Barbara J. Perenic / USA Today Sports Images

Tennessee continues to surround young quarterback Cam Ward with talent, adding Tate to Calvin Ridley, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Elic Ayomanor. Wideout wasn't the team's biggest need, but Ridley could walk following the 2026 season. Tate could help Ward take another step forward with a new coaching staff.

5 of 32

5. New York Giants - Arvell Reese, LB: B

New York Giants - Arvell Reese, LB: B
Adam Cairns / USA Today Sports Images

John Harbaugh prided his Ravens teams on strong defense, and Reese is another talented player for a front seven that already has an embarrassment of riches. Reese is very versatile, making him a strong fit alongside Brian Burns and Abdul Carter.

6 of 32

6. Kansas City Chiefs - Mansoor Delane, CB: C

Kansas City Chiefs - Mansoor Delane, CB: C
Ken Ruinard / USA Today Sports Images

Cornerback was a critical need for the Chiefs, who traded up from No. 9 overall to take Delane. The team lost starting corners Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson this offseason, and Delane was clearly the most polished and durable corner available as the team hopes to make another Super Bowl run. However, the Chiefs gave up critical draft capital in the move to trade up three spots.

7 of 32

7. Washington Commanders - Sonny Styles, LB: C

Washington Commanders - Sonny Styles, LB: C
Adam Cairns / USA Today Sports Images

Styles doesn't play a position that is usually under top 10 pick consideration, but the general weakness at the top of the 2026 class makes him a viable pick at No. 7. He joins a revamped linebacker room in Washington and has big shoes to fill after the departure of Bobby Wagner. Styles enters a great situation with head coach Dan Quinn.

8 of 32

8. New Orleans Saints - Jordyn Tyson, WR: C

New Orleans Saints - Jordyn Tyson, WR: C
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

There are major durability concerns with Tyson, but the upside is undeniable. The Arizona State alum has big-play ability, making him a great complement to Chris Olave as Tyler Shough continues to develop.

9 of 32

9. Cleveland Browns - Spencer Fano, OT: B-

It's unclear who will start at quarterback in Cleveland or when the team will be ready to contend. Still, left tackle was a clear need, and Fano helps the team complete their revamped offensive line after also adding Zion Johnson, Elgton Jenkins, and Tytus Howard this offseason. Todd Monken's offense could be elite on the ground after Fano's addition.

10 of 32

10. New York Giants - Francis Mauigoa, OL: B

New York Giants - Francis Mauigoa, OL: B
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

Mauigoa could potentially play guard or tackle for the Giants. It's a critical need for the Giants after Jaxson Dart suffered multiple injuries in his rookie season, and it also fits John Harbaugh's penchant for a run-heavy offense.

11 of 32

11. Dallas Cowboys - Caleb Downs, S: A

Dallas Cowboys - Caleb Downs, S: A
Adam Cairns / USA Today Sports Images

Enamored with upside, the Cowboys got their man in Downs. He was extremely productive in three seasons between Alabama and Ohio State, showing elite playmaking skills. The Cowboys' secondary gets that much deeper after adding Jalen Thompson and Cobie Durant earlier this offseason.

12 of 32

12. Miami Dolphins - Kadyn Proctor, OT: A

Miami Dolphins - Kadyn Proctor, OT: A
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

Miami is playing the long game with a roster that needs a complete rebuild. Proctor fits the mold as a massive tackle with elite talent, and he likely still needs time to work out the kinks. The fit is perfect, though it remains to be seen where Proctor will play in his rookie season.

13 of 32

13. Los Angeles Rams - Ty Simpson, QB: D

Los Angeles Rams - Ty Simpson, QB: D
Brett Davis / USA Today Sports Images

The shocker of the first round, Simpson takes on an heir apparent role behind Matthew Stafford. That gives him the needed development time, though there have been questions about whether Simpson had first-round talent. Head coach Sean McVay deserves the benefit of the doubt in quarterback development, but the pick doesn't help anytime soon for a roster ready to win now.

14 of 32

14. Baltimore Raves - Olaivavega Ioane, OG: B

Baltimore Raves - Olaivavega Ioane, OG: B
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

The offensive line interior was a desperate need for Baltimore heading into the offseason. They've addressed that need by signing John Simpson and drafting Ioane. The new offense is prepared for a rebound season, with the hope of keeping Lamar Jackson healthy.

15 of 32

15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Rueben Bain Jr., EDGE: A

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Rueben Bain Jr., EDGE: A
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

Bain is slightly undersized, but between his production and athleticism, he had a strong argument as the top defensive player in the draft. The Bucs got a steal at No. 15, especially in a draft that was thin on top-tier talent.

16 of 32

16. New York Jets - Kenyon Sadiq, TE: C

New York Jets - Kenyon Sadiq, TE: C
Troy Wayrynen / USA Today Sports Images

There's no doubt the Jets needed offensive weapons, and Sadiq has the elite speed and athleticism to be a difference maker. However, the production has never been there in college, with Sadiq capping out at 560 yards receiving last season. The lack of great quarterback play could also hurt his development.

17 of 32

17. Detroit Lions - Blake Miller, OT: B

Detroit Lions - Blake Miller, OT: B
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

The offensive line has remained a very high priority for the Lions. After showing some regression last season, they could be set for a rebound with multiple signings and the addition of Miller at right tackle.

18 of 32

18. Minnesota Vikings - Caleb Banks, DT: C

Minnesota Vikings - Caleb Banks, DT: C
Vasha Hunt / USA Today Sports Images

Banks is a risky pick, coming off an injury-plagued season at Florida. He has the potential to be a strong nose tackle immediately for a Vikings defense that needed help plugging the run, but the health questions could make this pick feast or famine.

19 of 32

19. Carolina Panthers - Monroe Freeling, OT: C-

Carolina Panthers - Monroe Freeling, OT: C-
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

Carolina has established a power offense, and leans into that tendency even further with Freeling. Despite the upside, it's unclear where or if he will play regularly, given the team's depth and the addition of multiple new offensive line starters in free agency.

20 of 32

20. Philadelphia Eagles - Makai Lemon, WR: B-

Philadelphia Eagles - Makai Lemon, WR: B-
Troy Wayrynen / USA Today Sports Images

Lemon is a great route runner and possession receiver, adding further depth to the Eagles' offense after they signed Hollywood Brown this offseason. The pick adds more fuel to a possible A.J. Brown trade, but it's not clear if wideout was the team's biggest need.

21 of 32

21. Pittsburgh Steelers - Max Iheanachor, OT: B

Pittsburgh Steelers - Max Iheanachor, OT: B
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

The Steelers have used major draft capital on the offensive line in recent seasons. After addressing wideout with the addition of Michael Pittman Jr., Iheanachor gives the team a likely new starting tackle with the potential of former first-rounder Troy Fautanu shifting to the left side.

22 of 32

22. Los Angeles Chargers - Akheem Mesidor, EDGE: C

Los Angeles Chargers - Akheem Mesidor, EDGE: C
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

Pass rush was a critical need for the Chargers, even while bringing back Khalil Mack. Mesidor is a late bloomer with big upside, and the team must feel he's a plug-and-play at age 25. The age brings some risk that Mesidor won't continue to improve, but it was certainly a need for the Chargers.

23 of 32

23. Dallas Cowboys - Malachi Lawrence, EDGE: B

Dallas Cowboys - Malachi Lawrence, EDGE: B
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

Lawrence was very productive over the last three years at UCF, and he adds depth to an already loaded front seven in Dallas. The team's depth will allow Lawrence to develop at his own pace, but the athleticism could force him onto the field.

24 of 32

24. Cleveland Browns - KC Concepcion, WR: A

Cleveland Browns - KC Concepcion, WR: A
Jay Biggerstaff / USA Today Sports Images

The Browns desperately needed offensive playmakers, and Concepcion's ability to run after the catch might have been the best in the draft. Joining Jerry Jeudy, Concepcion gives the Browns' quarterbacks strong weapons.

25 of 32

25. Chicago Bears - Dillon Thieneman, S: A

Chicago Bears - Dillon Thieneman, S: A
Ben Lonergan / USA Today Sports Images

Chicago filled a major need at safety, joining free agent acquisition Coby Bryant as a formidable safety tandem. Thieneman was highly productive in his college career and could be an anchor on Chicago's defense for years to come.

26 of 32

26. Houston Texans - Keylan Rutledge, OG: B+

Helen Comer / USA Today Sports Images

Houston has continued to remake its struggling offensive line, with Rutledge potentially lining up at guard or center. He has a chance to be a solid pro, and the Texans hope he puts the finishing touches on their impactful offseason line moves that also included free agents Braden Smith and Wyatt Teller.

27 of 32

27. Miami Dolphins - Chris Johnson, CB: B-

Miami Dolphins - Chris Johnson, CB: B-
Abe Arredondo / USA Today Sports Images

Johnson's name has moved up draft boards this offseason, but he's still a bit of a work in progress out of San Diego State. The situation is a good one for him, with new head coach Jeff Hafley and a rebuilding team that can give Johnson time to work out any issues.

28 of 32

28. New England Patriots - Caleb Lomu, OT: B

New England Patriots - Caleb Lomu, OT: B
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

New England added Will Campbell to the left side of the line in last year's draft, and Lomu has the potential to become their new right tackle. Like Campbell, Lomu is tall and athletic, and the team hopes he transitions more easily to the league.

29 of 32

29. Kansas City Chiefs - Peter Woods, DT: A

Kansas City Chiefs - Peter Woods, DT: A
Ken Ruinard / USA Today Sports Images

The loss of Tershawn Wharton, as well as Chris Jones' decline, were clear last season. Woods has major pass-rushing upside and is in a position to learn from the soon-to-be 32-year-old Jones. It's both a critical need and a strong development pick for the Chiefs.

30 of 32

30. New York Jets - Omar Cooper Jr, WR: A

New York Jets - Omar Cooper Jr, WR: A
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

Cooper is an excellent complement to Garrett Wilson's skillset as a slot receiver who is difficult to bring down. He's likely a steal for the Jets after falling in the draft much more than anticipated, giving the team an offensive playmaker they were desperate to add.

31 of 32

31. Tennessee Titans - Keldric Faulk, EDGE: B+

Tennessee Titans - Keldric Faulk, EDGE: B+
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

The Titans made moves to complement Jeffery Simmons in the offseason, but Faulk's addition could be more impactful. He's very young and raw, but brings big upside in a draft that is lacking in that department.

32 of 32

32. Seattle Seahawks - Jadarian Price, RB: C

Seattle Seahawks - Jadarian Price, RB: C
Michael Caterina / USA Today Sports Images

The loss of Kenneth Walker III in free agency left running back as a need for the Seahawks, and Seattle has never been shy about selecting running backs early in the draft. However, it's a big investment for a back who wasn't a starter at Notre Dame, but Price has the versatility and production to take on a bigger role.
