Iowa Football announced the addition of South Dakota State transfer Bryce Hawthorne on Saturday. The defensive lineman chose the Hawkeyes ahead of reported offers from Fresno State, North Texas, Coastal Carolina, San Diego State, Miami (OH), Texas State and James Madison since he entered the portal on Dec. 30.
Hawthorne joined fellow D-Lineman Jonah Pace and Hank Brown, a quarterback, as part of Iowa's 2025 transfer class. The Hawkeyes played host to Hawthorne's SDSU teammate, quarterback Mark Gronowski, on Friday.
After redshirting as a true freshman in 2022, Hawthorne appeared in 17 games the last two seasons. That included all 14 contests this past Fall, during which he produced 5.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
At the time of publishing, On3 ranked Hawthorne (6-3, 285) as the 321st player overall in the 2025 portal class. He was not rated by Rivals and 247Sports.
247Sports ranked Hawthorne as a two-star recruit when he was coming out of Osseo (MN) High. The network saw him as the No. 266th-ranked defensive lineman nationally and the No. 25 overall player in Minnesota in the '22 class. He reported scholarship offers from Bemidji State, Mankata, Moorhead and St. Thomas as a prep.
