For Iowa, they’ll have to play smarter and cleaner against Washington than what they did against Ohio State. Head coach Kirk Ferentz knew his team put themselves in a hole they couldn’t climb out of.
“If you’re going to beat a team like that, you’ve got to play clean and really be smart in terms of that,” Ferentz said postgame. “If you’re going to give yourself a chance to win, you have to do that, and we came up short today. Various times it really kind of hurt us there … It’s imperative this week especially, you’ve got to move on, you’ve got to move on faster because we’ve got a six-day week. So that’ll be the message tomorrow. Proud of our guys. It’s a good group of guys, and we’re just going to keep pushing forward.”
On the flip side, Jedd Fisch and Washington blew a 21-10 lead to USC and lost 25-21. Fisch addressed what went wrong in the loss for the Huskies when he spoke to reporters immediately after the game.
“For the most part, I’d like to give credit to Coach Riley and USC. They battled, they played really hard, they ran the ball a lot, and I thought that when they needed to hit some passes, they hit some passes,” Fisch said.
“It was one of those games, 21-10 in the third quarter, and we had the opportunity to put it away, and they made a long conversion, and then after that we headed back, and we can’t turn the ball over and give them seven points. Altogether, I think our players played their hearts out. I thought it was a great competition and that’s what college football is.”
