One of the biggest stories in college football right now is Jake Retzlaff, as he has been in one of the weirder positions that we have seen for a college football player. Playing at Brigham Young University, the school has an honor code that reportedly was broken by Retzlaff for having premarital sex. As a result, Retzlaff was facing a seven-game suspension to begin the 2025 season.
However, things have taken the next step as Retzlaff has made a massive decision about his future. Let’s take a deeper dive into what happened.
Jake Retzlaff took to social media and officially announced that he is withdrawing from the BYU Cougars.
“After a lot of prayer, reflection, and conversations with those I trust, I’ve made the difficult decision to officially withdraw from BYU and step away from the BYU Football program. BYU has been more to me than just football. It’s been a place of growth – spiritually, mentally, and physically. I’m grateful for every teammate, coach, staff member, and fan who’s supported me along the way. The relationships and memories I’ve made in Provo will always be a part of me. That said, I’m excited to turn the page and embrace the next chapter. My journey is far from over – and I’m more motivated than ever to keep chasing my goals.”
On3 Sports reported that instead of entering the NCAA Transfer Portal, Retzlaff will enroll at a new school and join a team as a walk-on. This is because he would need to secure a waiver in order to play this season and joining as a walk-on would not have that same requirement. Jake Retzlaff was able to have a good showing last season as the team’s starting quarterback, as he completed 213 of 368 (57.9%) for 2,947 yards with 20 passing touchdowns to 12 interceptions while also attempting 100 rushes for 417 yards (4.2 yards per carry) with six rushing touchdowns.
It will be interesting to see where Retzlaff is going to be playing in the upcoming college football season and if he will perform well enough to enter the 2026 NFL Draft.
