Last season the Oklahoma Sooners had a revolving door at the quarterback position. They started the year with Jackson Arnold, who wowed everyone in spring ball but ended up going to Michael Hawkins.

Then, of course, they went back to Arnold. And, all of those moves back and forth were just to find something different within the offense -- a spark, if you will. The Sooners had maybe the worst offense in the entire SEC, but having the elite defense that they had kept them afloat and got them into a bowl game.

Jackson Arnold ended up transferring, and Michael Hawkins showed some flash in the bowl game. But they needed someone for the 2025 season. When they hired Ben Arbuckle as the new offensive coordinator, he brought his quarterback, John Mateer, over from Washington State. Mateer was one of the best quarterbacks in the country last year, and Arbuckle ran one of the best offenses.

So, if you need any indication of what the Sooners offense will be like in 2025, you could probably watch some Washington State games from 2024. And if you want to see what Oklahoma is getting in Mateer, you could watch those games, too, or you could just look at some of the clips that are coming out from spring football. Mateer is the real deal, and in some of these throws, he's showing it.

And, he's already building chemistry with Deion Burks and Javonnie Gibson.

In a recent video that was obtained of him and the two wide receivers working out together, they were somewhere that looked to be off campus, which means they were putting in work together outside of practice.

The chemistry is growing, and there is something to be said about everyone's first impression of Mateer so far. No one has anything bad to say. Mateer is showing that 2025 may very well be much different than 2024. He's the savior, at least for the upcoming season.
