Julian Lewis Didn’t Expect Deion Sanders To Put Kaidon Salter in the Quarterback Mix

Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis knew competition was coming, but even he admits he was caught off guard by Deion Sanders' decision to bring in a talented passer like Kaidon Salter through the transfer portal, as the true freshman signal-caller explained on the "DNVR Buffs Podcast."

“Definitely, I expected them to bring somebody else in," Lewis said when asked about feeling pressure in Colorado's quarterback competition. "We lost a couple guys. I didn't expect them to bring in a guy like Kaidon Salter to come compete with me. But no, it's definitely a blessing coming in with this opportunity. You can't beat this."

Lewis, highly touted as one of the nation's top young quarterbacks and a five-star recruit, brings elite arm talent to Colorado. His impressive high school resume includes a trip to Georgia's 6A state championship game and throwing for 3,798 yards and 48 touchdowns in his junior season.

However, Salter's arrival raises the competition to another level. A former standout at Liberty, Salter threw for 1,886 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024 while rushing for 587 yards and seven scores, proving he's a dynamic dual-threat talent ready to make an immediate impact.

Coach Prime, known for his calculated yet bold roster moves, remains noncommittal on who will emerge as Colorado’s starter for 2025. Sanders has stated openly that he'll let competition dictate the outcome, refusing to tip his hand early. Bringing Salter into the fold signals Sanders' belief that healthy competition will push the team forward.

Lewis appreciates the value of having someone with Salter’s potential as a competitor, acknowledging the level of talent he's now facing. Salter’s blend of arm strength and mobility provides Sanders with multiple options offensively, fueling speculation about how Colorado’s quarterback battle will unfold.
