Kalen DeBoer provides injury updates on two key trench pieces following Alabama's second and final scrimmage of fall camp

Alabama just wrapped up its second and final scrimmage of fall camp. Soon after that scrimmage had concluded, head coach Kalen DeBoer addressed the media for his scheduled press conference and provided updates on two of the Crimson Tide's projected starters, defensive lineman James Smith and offensive lineman Jaeden Roberts.

Both players missed last weekend's scrimmage, and according to DeBoer, that didn't change on Saturday.

“Two guys that didn’t scrimmage today, Jaeden and James, same as last week,” DeBoer told reporters. “James has been working through and building up. Feel good about the progress he’s had in the week of practice, and with it being live, needed to hold back there, but he’s getting closer by the day.

“Jaeden has a concussion. I’ll just tell you what it is. He’s going through the protocol of that, and so, he hasn’t done anything from a team standpoint, starting to work back into that protocol, whic h included being out there today but not to participate in the scrimmage.”

Considering the season opener is still two weeks away, it doesn't sound like either player is a concern to participate when Alabama takes the field to play Florida State in Tallahassee. Granted, we don't know that for sure, so this will obviously be something that will need to be monitored in the coming days.

The Crimson Tide need both players, but especially Smith. Obviously, Roberts is a starting-caliber guard who will continue to be a vital piece of the rotation, but fans should still feel good about the combination of Kam Dewberry and Geno VanDeMark, should Roberts have to miss any game action. Defensive line is more a rotation, and Smith is expected to be Alabama's top interior pass rusher while providing another elite run-stopping presence.

Stay tuned for more updates from Alabama's fall camp.
