Kamario Taylor Transfer Debate Will be Relentless

Mississippi State has been one of the pleasant surprises in the country through the first few weeks of the 2026 season. After a comeback victory at South Carolina on Saturday, they entered the AP Poll at No. 24. A big reason for this success has been the play of quarterback Kamario Taylor, who is playing at an All-American level through the Bulldogs first three games.

And this leads me to a topic that will be relentlessly discussed over the next few months if the Bulldogs and Taylor continue to play at a high level. Taylor is only a sophomore. This means that he must play at least one more college football season before entering the NFL Draft.

A decade ago, this would have been amazing news for Mississippi State and its program. However, in 2026 it is cause for concern and anxiety. The transfer portal continuously robs joy from non-blue blood programs like Mississippi State.

Will Taylor play for the Bulldogs in 2027, or will he leave for more money? For every amazing play Taylor has during the remainder of this season, and every upset victory he might lead Mississippi State to, that question will be brought up. It has already started, as you can see here:

This is a popular public opinion. The assumption is that Taylor couldn’t possibly stay at Mississippi State and pass up playing for a program like Miami, Georgia, Ohio State or Texas. While it is highly unlikely that the Bulldogs will be able to match the dollar amount that will be offered to him by the elite, there is more to this story. Here are a few reasons why it is unlikely that Taylor will transfer:

Taylor grew up just 35 miles away from campus in Macon, Mississippi
He is a lifelong Mississippi State fan
His uncle, Omarr Conner, was a starting quarterback at Mississippi State from 2004-2006
His younger brother, Jayytee Taylor, is a freshman at Mississippi State
Taylor has already publicly stated, on multiple occasions, that he will not transfer

Money can change a lot of things, but it isn’t as if Taylor has been or will be panhandling in Starkville. Mississippi State hasn’t buried their head in the sand regarding this topic. They know what is coming, and they have taken an aggressive approach to ensure that Taylor is back in 2027. A big part of that is raising additional funds, which they are aggressively doing.

However, never say never during the portal era. But as we sit here in late September 2026, Mississippi State fans should feel confident that their star quarterback will be back next season. The blue bloods (I’m looking at you Miami) likely sees it differently, but for once I don’t see this going their way.
