Jon Jon Kamara is officially entering the transfer portal, and while the move isn’t shocking, it’s definitely one Kansas fans would’ve liked to avoid. Kamara showed real promise as a freshman and looked like a guy who could grow into a bigger role over the next couple of years. Now, somebody else is going to get that chance.
I will be entering the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Thank you to the entire Kansas Jayhawks organization for everything during my time in Lawrence.

Kamara finished the 2025 season with 13 tackles and a half sack while rotating through the Jayhawks’ defensive front. He wasn’t an every-down guy, but he found his way onto the field often enough to matter. He brought energy, got downhill when asked, and looked the part of a young player figuring it out week by week. There’s value in that, especially for teams looking to build defensive depth through guys who already know what it’s like to play at the Power Four level.
For Kansas, it’s a loss that cuts into a position group that was just starting to settle in. The staff has been working to build a more consistent rotation on the defensive side, and Kamara looked like a solid piece of that puzzle. Now they’ll have to reshuffle again, whether that means leaning on a younger name or dipping back into the portal themselves to replace him.
It’s also a reminder of how quickly things can change for a roster that’s still in build mode. Kamara’s not leaving because of a lack of playing time or some midseason dust-up. He played, he produced, and he made the decision after the year. That’s just college football now. Guys want to find the right fit, and if they think they can climb the depth chart faster somewhere else, they’re going to take that shot.
As for where he ends up, Kamara should have a handful of options. He’s got Power Four experience, has shown he can contribute, and still has multiple years of eligibility left. That’s exactly the kind of profile that draws attention in December. It’s just a matter of finding the right scheme and the right staff to help him take the next step.
Kansas will move forward. Kamara will too. But this one definitely leaves a dent in the rotation.
