More information came to light on Curt Cignetti's new contract with Indiana.

Cignetti signed an eight-year, $93.25 million extension that makes him one of college football's highest-paid head coaches. The deal reportedly becomes fully guaranteed if he's fired at any time without cause.

On the other hand, a provision shared by NBC Sports' Nicole Auerbach shows that Cignetti would owe the university money if he voluntarily leaves within the next seven years. The buyout begins at $15 million if he exits from Dec. 1, 2025, to Nov. 30, 2026, and decreases by $3 million in each of the next three years.

The rate then cuts in half, starting at $6 million in 2029 until reaching $1 million in 2032. Cignetti wouldn't owe anything if he left during his final season under contract.

Contract includes other provisions

Auerbach also noted two "good faith" contract clauses, one that could affect those aforementioned fees.

Indiana agreed to review Cignetti's contract within 120 days if he leads the program to the College Football Playoff semifinals. Cignetti can end his employment without penalty if he's not offered a new deal that would make him no less than the third-highest-paid head coach (based on average annual salary) at CFP-eligible schools.

They will consult an "independent valuation expert" to provide a non-binding market assessment if needed. The clause doesn't deter Indiana and Cignetti from altering the contract terms at any other time.

Another provision stipulates that Indiana will make "every reasonable effort" to maintain a strong staff of assistant coaches, strength coaches, operations staff, and support. The university will "perform a good faith market review any time the Staff Pool ranks lower than fifth in the Big Ten Conference or tenth nationally."

Cignetti stays at Indiana

Indiana awarded Cignetti a year after making an unexpected trip to the College Football Playoff. The Hoosiers are poised to return to the postseason, ranking No. 2 behind Big Ten rival Ohio State amid a 7-0 start.

The school announced Cignetti's new deal last Thursday following a momentum 30-20 win at Oregon.

"We are committed to investing in IU Football in such a way that we can compete at a championship level, and the No. 1 priority in doing that is ensuring that Coach Cignetti is the leader of our program," IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson said in the announcement. "His accomplishments during the last season and a half have been nothing short of remarkable. As much as anyone, he believed in what was possible with our program, and he's turned that belief into reality. This is a great day for IU Football and Indiana University. I look forward to working alongside Coach Cignetti for many years to come."

Cignetti joined Indiana last season after a two-year stint at James Madison. The 64-year-old intends to stay for the long haul.

"I couldn't be more proud to be a Hoosier, and I plan on retiring as a Hoosier," Cignetti said in a video shared by Indiana. "The way that this state has embraced us and our success in football has meant more to me than anything else."

Indiana will look to stay undefeated when hosting UCLA this Saturday at noon ET.
