Kirk Herbstreit Has New Traveling Partner After Death Of His Oldest Dog

Kirk Herbstreit will commence another busy work week with a heavy heart.

The broadcaster's dog, Ben, died of cancer last week. Herbstreit and the college football community mourned the loss of a beloved golden retriever who routinely accompanied Herbstreit across the country on Thursday Night Football and College GameDay assignments.

On Thursday, Herbstreit posted a graphic depicting his travel itinerary over the next few days. He'll go to Philadelphia for a pivotal NFC East showdown between the Eagles and Washington Commanders before heading to Georgia for production meetings.

After flying back home for his son's high school football playoff game, he'll go back to Athens early Saturday for College GameDay. Herbstreit will then call the SEC showdown between Georgia and Tennessee.

"Again thank you to so many of you reaching out and offering your condolences about Ben. We all miss him & will never forget his spirit and presence in our lives," Herbstreit wrote. "Back on the road this week for a great week of HS, College, & NFL football. Nothing like November football!"

A fan asked if Ben's "little brother" would accompany Herbstreit on the road. He confirmed that his dog, Peter, will indeed join him over the next three days.

"Yes Peter is with me this week," Herbstreit responded. "See how he does."

Herbstreit worked his usual schedule last weekend while grieving Ben's loss. Fans at Baton Rouge showed their love and appreciation with signs and chants honoring "America's best friend." LSU also shared a digital billboard hanging in Ben's honor.

Herbstreit teared up during College GameDay before the show introduced a touching tribute to Ben.

"Really wanted to thank all of you for the avalanche of love and support you’ve shown Ben," Herbstreit said. "It gives me and my family such comfort knowing how he impacted so many people's lives around the country. He was a beautiful and loving soul."

Perhaps football fans will see Peter during Herbstreit's next few assignments.
