Kyle Louis can be a Secret Weapon on Defense
The Miami Dolphins selected the hybrid box safety and linebacker Kyle Louis out of Pittsburgh in Round five of the draft last weekend.
Louis was the highest-ranked remaining player on Daniel Jeremiah’s board at the time of Miami’s pick and will most certainly be a fan favorite in Miami very quickly.
In the last 2 seasons with Pitt, Louis recorded 6 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 93 solo tackles.
The Dolphins’ regime is emphasizing versatile, athletic, and rangy players in this year’s draft, and Louis fits the bill, checking every one of those boxes.
Louis is an undersized linebacker who primarily plays in the nickel overhand role.
At the 2026 NFL Combine, he recorded a 4.53-second 40-yard dash and exploded off the ground with a 39-inch vertical and 10 feet 9 inches broad jump.
Louis is a coverage guru with the athletic chops to play sideline to sideline.
His 220 pounds of strength also help him stop the run and shed blocks by tight ends. His playstyle is similar to that of new Miami Dolphins linebacker Ronnie Harrison, who started his career as a box safety out of Alabama.
Louis will likely play early for the Dolphins in nickel sets as a weak-side linebacker or nickel corner. He will excel in the primarily zone coverage sets run by Jeff Hafley.
It will be up to Hafley to maximize Louis’s talents, as he doesn’t have a natural position in base defense at the NFL level, but what he does offer is something many teams look for: speed and coverage ability in a very pass-happy league.
Louis was also a leader and captain at Pitt, and that is another valuable asset he brings to the NFL, in that he will not embarrass you off the field.
While many teams passed on Louis because he doesn’t have the prototypical size you want to be an every-down player, if used right, he can be a secret weapon for a defense that is creative enough to maximize his skill set.
